The process approach in ISO 22301 clause 8.1

The draft asks users to incorporate the process approach described in ISO 22301:2019 clause 8.1, which means criteria, control, records, change control and control of externally provided processes.

Basis: The public scope names clause 8.1. The clause substance is stated from the held ISO 22301:2019 text. The draft text is not public. This page reads the public scope and the held ISO 22301:2019 clause set, and does not quote either as draft text.

01What applies

The public scope says the document is intended to guide users of ISO 22301 to incorporate the process approach described in ISO 22301:2019 clause 8.1 within the BCMS. That clause requires the organization to plan, carry out and control the processes needed to meet BCMS requirements and the actions decided for risks and opportunities, to set criteria for those processes and control them against the criteria, to keep documented information that the processes ran as planned, to control planned change and review unintended change, and to keep externally provided processes and the supply chain under control.

02Why it matters

This is the most concrete sentence in the public record, and the most useful. It tells a BCMS owner exactly where to start: the clause the organization already has to satisfy. A process model built on 8.1 needs no new requirement and no new certificate. It needs criteria, records and owners.

03What good looks like

Audit the existing 8.1 evidence against the five elements: criteria, records, planned change, unintended change, external processes. For each operational process, write the criterion and the record. Where a supplier is involved, add a verification step. This is the work that prepares the organization for the draft without depending on its text.

04Evidence an auditor asks for

Ask for the criterion behind the last operational decision. If the criterion is in someone's head, 8.1 is not implemented as a process.

EvidenceThe record
CriteriaA written criterion for each operational process
RecordsA record from the last cycle showing the process ran to the criterion
ChangeChange records and a review of unintended change
ExternalVerification of an externally provided process

05Where it commonly fails

  • Process criteria written for the audit and never used
  • Records that show activity but not the criterion
  • External processes controlled only by contract

06What to do before the estimate

Score each operational process against the five 8.1 elements. Fix the lowest two.
